Andon Pan
Andon Pan is a Vancouver-based stone sculptor with a practice developed over several decades. His work reflects a sustained engagement with material, form, and natural subject matter, shaped through long-term studio practice.
Working across natural stone, including nephrite jade, rock crystal, granite, and semi-precious stone, each sculpture is conceived and carved as an individual work. There are no editions and no repetition. Every piece exists as a direct response to the material from which it is formed.
A Practice Shaped by Material
At the core of the work is a disciplined attention to material. The structure, density, and natural variation of each stone inform the direction of the sculpture.
Rather than imposing a fixed design, form develops through a controlled and iterative process. Subtle shifts in grain, inclusions, and tonal variation are not removed, but incorporated into the final composition.
This results in work that feels resolved rather than imposed, balancing refinement with the original character and preserves natural beauty of the material.
Form & Expression
The work moves between representational and abstract forms, often drawing from wildlife and natural structures associated with the Pacific Northwest.
Subjects are approached with restraint. Rather than emphasizing detail for its own sake, the focus is on capturing weight, movement, and internal balance. The result is a sculptural language that prioritizes clarity, proportion, and presence.
Each piece reflects not only the subject, but the accumulated discipline and evolving formal language of the practice.
Studio Practice
All work is carved individually using a combination of powered tools and manual refinement. The process is time-intensive and varies depending on material and scale.
There is no production cycle or volume output. Each sculpture is developed at its own pace, guided by the demands of the material rather than external timelines.
This approach ensures that each work remains distinct, both in form and in execution.
Material, Time, and Craft
Over decades of practice, Pan has developed a highly controlled carving technique, primarily using powered hand tools while maintaining a strong emphasis on manual precision and finish. The time required to complete each work varies significantly depending on the material and complexity of the subject.
His sculptures are not produced in volume. Each piece is the result of a deliberate and time-intensive process, shaped by both technical expertise and the unpredictable nature of stone.
Collections, Commissions & Film Use
Pan’s work is held in private collections and has been selected for use in professional production settings, notably appearing as set decoration in the ABC television series Alaska Daily (2022, Episode 6). These collaborations demonstrate how the work’s material presence and sculptural clarity translate effectively to high-definition broadcast media.

Background & Development
Born in 1949, Andon Pan demonstrated an early affinity for art and carving, holding his first exhibition in childhood. Following relocating to Canada in the early 1980s, he steadily developed a disciplined studio practice , working across diverse materials while shaping a distinctive sculptural language that bridges Eastern sensibility with Western formal expression.
In the early 1990s, he founded and operated Greenville Art & Jewellers in Vancouver’s Sinclair Centre, where his work was exhibited and acquired by both private and public audiences. Since then, he has maintained a studio-based practice, with his sculptures circulating organically through collectors and professional networks.
