Much of what is available in the market today, particularly in stone and jade, falls into two categories: decorative objects or repeated designs produced in volume.
This work is neither.
Each sculpture is created as a single, independent piece. There are no moulds, no editions, and no attempt to replicate past works. The form is shaped directly by the material and the moment in which it is carved. Once completed, it is not repeated.
Guided by Material, Not Template
Every stone carries its own structure, density, colour, and internal variation. Rather than forcing a fixed design onto the material, the process begins by understanding what the stone allows.
This approach results in work that feels resolved rather than imposed. Subtle shifts in grain, natural inclusions, and variations in tone are not removed, they are incorporated into the final composition.
The outcome is a body of work where no two pieces share the same origin or result.
A Practice Developed Over Time
The work reflects decades of continuous practice. Over time, the technique has evolved to balance control with restraint, knowing when to refine and when to leave the material untouched.
This is often seen in the contrast between highly polished surfaces and raw stone. It is not a stylistic decision applied uniformly, but one that emerges from each individual piece.
There is no emphasis on speed or volume. Each sculpture is completed at its own pace, based on the demands of the material and the complexity of the form.
Material with Regional Significance
Nephrite jade from British Columbia is one of the defining materials within the work. Its strength, density, and natural variation make it both technically demanding and visually distinctive.
Beyond its physical properties, it carries a connection to place. Using locally sourced materials grounds the work within the Pacific Northwest, giving it a context that extends beyond the studio.
Other materials, granite, marble, alabaster, and antler, are selected with the same consideration for origin and suitability.
Presence That Holds Over Time
In many environments, objects are selected for immediate visual impact. Over time, however, those same objects can lose relevance.
Stone behaves differently. It does not rely on trend or surface treatment. Its presence comes from weight, material, and form.
As a result, these sculptures tend to integrate into their surroundings rather than compete with them. They remain consistent as the space around them changes.
Suitable Across Contexts
The work has been placed in private collections, integrated into designed interiors, and used in film and production environments.
What allows for this flexibility is not variation in style, but consistency in material and execution. The sculptures can function as focal points or as part of a broader composition, depending on the needs of the space.
